Conwell’s neighbors who lived in the mansions and luxury town houses along Broad Street may have occasionally worshipped in Conwell’s church, but by and large they sent their children and their money to other colleges. Chapter 1 The Man, the Speech, the “Temple Idea” 19 At times Conwell seemed to doubt whether Temple College could be more than a momentary social experiment, a seed for others to cultivate and nurture to fruition.

The move became possible when J. Howard Reber (LLB Law 1900) bequeathed $300,000 to the Law School and when Congregation Keneseth Israel (KI) decided to follow its congregants to the suburbs. KI’s two properties, a synagogue sanctuary building and a classroom building only a half block south of Conwell Hall, were purchased by the university for $250,000. Klein raised funds to refurbish the interiors. In 1953 the Law School moved into the former KI classroom building, renamed Reber Hall in 1954.

Dean H. Evert Kendig, who succeeded Minehart in 1932 and served until 1950, established a master of science program, stimulated faculty research and participation in scientific meetings, and obtained external support for students. Kendig’s attention to detail and professional standards paid a substantial dividend when in 1939 the School of Pharmacy received full accreditation from the American Council in Pharmaceutical Education. Kendig also persistently complained to the Temple administration about the poor facilities at Eighteenth and Buttonwood and pleaded for a new building.
