Geldart and Cranfield studied the fluidization characteristics of large particles (dp>l mm) of alkalized alumina in both two- and threedimensional beds 72,73 . They found both Um{ and emf to vary with bed height in the 2-D bed but to be practically constant in the 3-D case. In both beds however the minimum bubbling velocity remained constant as bed height was changed. Furthermore the visible bubble flow (estimated from cine photographs of the bed surface) was greater in the 3-D bed than in the 2-D bed at corresponding values of U - Umh but was only some 55 per cent of the excess gas flow.
