6 is fundamental for Calvin, as for others. Calvin’s comments in the Institutes on this passage show us his fundamental approach to God’s revealed nature. Here we may observe, first, that his eternity and self-existence are declared by his magnificent name twice repeated; and, secondly, that in the enumeration of his perfections, he is described not as he is in himself, but in relation to us, in order that acknowledgement of him may be more a vivid actual impression than empty visionary speculation.

So the term ‘person’ is to be used with self-awareness and some care. In Calvin’s view, then, the use of one kind of expression for God’s threeness (‘person’) and another kind of expression for God’s oneness (‘nature’ or ‘essence’ or ‘substance’) safeguards New Testament language about the trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Such usage not only keeps us from manifest inconsistency but also guides us into thinking and saying the right kinds of thing in turn about God the Father, about God the Son and about God the Spirit.

The two are distinct but connected. God’s activities, according to Calvin, partly reveal his nature and they are, in turn, partial and adapted expressions of his essence and, so to speak, endorsed or guaranteed by it. 5 Paradoxically, while it is the simplicity of God’s essence that makes it incomprehensible to us at the same time God’s essence guarantees his immutability. God’s essence is what he is. His nature is what of his essence God has revealed to us in a way or ways that we can grasp. 37 CALVIN: A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED So while God alone knows himself, his own essence, immediately and directly, by God’s gracious revelation we may know God’s nature and thereby apprehend aspects of his essence.
