One of the things that has bedevilled the study of this period is the sense we gain of a pattern amid what is in fact much variation. So as much as we might want to assert the appearance of formal types, they are not susceptible of quantiﬁable proof. There are several reasons for this. First, this is a period of socio-political formation. There were no rules, rather there was much competition, which encourages variation within the boundaries of comprehensible symbolic display.
