This can also be true for adults. It is certainly not helpful to force the issue and insist that students close their eyes. Only by going through the fantasy will they be able to trust that the experience is a safe one. Even with eyes open many students and some adults can have a vivid fantasy experience. For those for whom closing the eyes is a difficult instruction but who are anxious to conform to the teacher’s requests, the suggestion, ‘You can peep if you want to’, allows them to do just that.

After two minutes, direct the ‘B’s to make eye contact and lean slightly forward in their chairs. ’ At the end of the exercise, invite the ‘A’s to guess what the secret instructions were. Then ask them to discuss how they felt during the six minutes and if they noticed any differences in their partner’s behaviour. If they did notice differences, ‘A’s should comment on the effect the differences had on them and how they made them feel. Then reverse roles and repeat the exercise even though the ‘A’s know what the instructions are.

Scripted fantasy. The central theme of this book is the educational implications and applications of scripted fantasy. It is important to differentiate between scripted fantasy and guided fantasy as the two terms are often confused. Here we use the term ‘scripted fantasy’ to mean a situation in which a prepared script is read to an individual or a group, as a stimulus for a fantasy journey. The scripts might cover any one of a variety of themes but have been written to avoid prescribing the responses from the fantasiser.
